In order to operate in the State of California a contractor must have a valid contracting license.  Additionally a contractor is required to have a Surety bond equal to $12,500 or more.  If the contractor has employees then they must also have Workers Compensation.  Lastly, although not required by law, it is a good idea if your contractor has Liability insurance that will protect your assets in the event of jobsite accidents or property damage.
